All General Practitioners must meet basic requirements to work in Australia.

Eligibility requires the applicant to have undertaken the accredited process for registration in a country approved by the Australian Medical Council (AMC). We shall assist you to determine if your qualifications and experience meet the eligibility requirements.

An International Medical Graduate & practitioner must satisfy the Australian Medical Council (AMC) requirements through English language proficiency tests or be granted an exemption from taking the International English Language Testing System if an IMG’s secondary education is completed in English.

If you’re an IMG and/or a GP from a country where English is not the first language, then the registered medical board of Australia will require you to demonstrate English language proficiency by  providing evidence of having completed training in English or having completed the IELTS examination to the following standards:

  • ·         The applicant must have achieved a minimum score of 7 in each of the four components
  • ·         Alternative English proficiency tests that will be accepted are:

o   Completed and obtained an overall pass in the Occupational English Test (OET) with grades A or B only in each of the four components; or

o   A pass in the Professional Linguistic Assessment Board (PLAB) in the United Kingdom; or

o   A pass in the New Zealand Registration Examination (NZREX) in New Zealand

  • ·         Results must have been obtained within 2 years prior to applying for registration

In addition, all applicants for specialist assessment (including for Area of Need specialist positions) are required to pass the language test or be granted an exemption before commencing AMC examinations.

The MBBS or equivalent, (MB ChB, MD, MB BCh, BM BCh , BM BS, MB BChir) is the primary medical degree required to gain registration.

Mutually recognised qualifications

The RACGP sets and maintains standards for general practices, and therefore recognises overseas trained doctors with qualifications equivalent to Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) or equivalent permitting General Registration & Fellowship ad eundum gradum.

Overseas trained doctors who hold the following qualifications are eligible for FRACGP ad eundem gradum whilst working in the Australian general practice setting:

  • ·         The Certificate in Family Practice from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) who have also passed both parts of the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination,
  • ·         Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners (MRCGP) and the Certificate of the Joint Committee on Postgraduate Training for General Practice (JCPTGP) UK,
  • ·         Fellowship of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (FRNZCGP),
  • ·         Graduates of the Irish college of General Practitioners (ICGP) holding the Membership of the Irish College of General Practitioners (MICGP),

A Successful completion of the Australian Medical Council (AMC) MCQ examination is required for International Medical Graduates & Practitioners who do not hold these qualifications.

We can also fast track for a GP position in a clinic that has been designated ‘Area of Need’ status. This means being eligible to work in an outer metro, inner regional practices or coastal locations due to GPs are the backbone of rural health care, and GPs in rural areas need strong procedural skills.

A General Practitioner in Australia must register to having at least a minimum of 5 years of experience in General Practice.

Working experience in environments similar to that in Australian General Practice will be deemed highly positive by the Medical Board in relation to your experience, and this will deliver a more efficient acceleration in the registration process.

As a qualified GP your pay package will be;

  • ·         Gross billing reward of up to 50%, and
  • ·         Yearly guaranteed Salary Package of AUD$80,000
